Christian Duty

in a Republic

American Christians live in a democratic republic.  This is different from Old Testament kings, or New Testament Roman caesars; where citizens had no choice regarding their governmental leaders. Modern day Americans elect their nation's leaders and are directly responsible for their government.

The Apostle Paul states in Romans:

Romans 13:1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.

In America the foremost governing authority (established by God according to Romans) is the US Constitution.  Our elected representatives are subject to the Constitution's clauses as are we.  Presidents, Senators, Representatives and Judges swear to uphold the Constitution. (These oaths are listed in Chapter 12:  The US Constitution).  State leaders and representatives also swear to uphold the national Constitution.  Any leader that does not follow the Constitution breaks his oath and deviates from God's Will.

Like God gave man dominion over all the earth, God gave Americans dominion over our government by putting us in control of selecting the leaders of our government.

Genesis 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Together, Romans 13 and Genesis 1, call for Americans to:

In America, the citizens have a duty to elect leaders with good character who are obedient to God and to the Constitution.

However we should not blindly follow the governing leaders if their actions do not align with God.  See Acts 5 where the Apostles defy the governing Sanhedrin to follow God's Will.

Acts 5:27-29 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest.  “We gave you strict orders not to teach in [Jesus] name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”

Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!"

American Christians are duty bound to object to and replace those leaders who are opposing God's Will for our society.

Government Structure:

The Constitution and Israel have a common trait

The Israelite government under Moses was set up to solve  problems to the greatest possible extent at the tribal (local) level where they originated.  The hard cases they brought to Moses (national government), but every small matter they judged themselves.  (Exodus 18:13-26  Chapter 6: The Old Testament Government Established by God)

The Bible tells us local government is better government.

The US Constitution defines governmental roles in a similar manner as Moses.  Stating the specific duties of the federal government, while leaving other duties to the states or local governments via the 10th Amendment.

Many problems in America today result from our representatives NOT following the Constitution.   For example, federal judges once ruled that abortion, killing a baby, is a constitutional right.  It is NOT (Chapter 15 discusses abortion).  At the time of the Roe v Wade abortion ruling, it usurped existing law in all 50 states. Such a changing of the Constitution should have required amending it, as was done to abolish slavery.

When a Christian votes for politicians that chose to not follow the Constitution, there are consequences.  Aborted babies is one.  Banning religious activity in public is another. (Chapter 13: Freedom of Religion - 1st Amendment)  If the Constitution becomes unimportant, the 1st Amendment religious protections are also unimportant.  Christians must vote wisely.
